Song Selection Criteria
Essential
- Must fit within band vision.
- Designated singer must want to sing the song.
- All band members must want, or at least be willing, to play the song…over and over again!
- Must be able to learn in a reasonable amount of time and not overly complex (remember More Than a Feeling).
- Must have parts for all band members.
Desirable
- Tempo suitable for fast or slow dancing.
- Be Canadian Content.
- Reasonably easy harmonies.
Song Process
Our process for choosing songs is the following:
- We pick songs from the candidate list, which is frequently updated.
- We listen to the song as a group and have a (5 minute) discussion as to whether the song is doable and who would do what parts.
- If possible, have a rough jam to the song to help determine if it’s doable.
- Jam to the song to determine if it can be placed on the Set List
- If the song works, it gets added to the WIP List and real learning and practice begins
- If the song is not performable right now but fun to play, it gets added to the jamming list
- If the song doesn’t work, it gets dropped
Note that we need to update this process. Before a song is added to a set list, we need to figure out whether it even fits in the set list. For example, country songs are unlikely to make it into a set list for our band. Likewise, we can have several set lists. It’s most likely that we need a stage for a song that we think we can perform, but isn’t yet put into a set list.
